February 3, 2010: New Legislation Poses Threat to DSHEA

At a press conference held earlier today, Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) announced that he would be introducing legislation
that would amend the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA) to give the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)
additional powers over retailers and suppliers in the dietary supplements industry.

Looks like we all need to sharpen our apothecary and herbal skills. Get those medicinal gardens planted.
And of course, squawk at your government!

Personally, I think that some standards for supplements are needed. The St. John's Wort from Company A may be organically grown, but not certified; checked for potency, and completely pure, Company B may grow their product with nasty chemicals, package it any which way and cut it with other herbs. Each labels their product as 450 mg St John's Wort, but the products are not the same.

Here is a somewhat less alarmist view of the legislation, with a link to the actual bill.

All herbal books warn that the herb industry is very un-standardized and cautions against some potentially dangerous herbs like pennyroyal and tansy whose potency is not tested. Same for home-grown or prepared herbs, you will never be exactly sure of the strength. Certain herbs gathered in different seasons or different areas of the same meadow (a low spot that gets more water for example) can vary widely.

As much as we all gripe at the USDA for complicated milk and meat processing laws, they have done some good things like get morphine and cocaine out of over the counter "tonics" and borax out of sausage
