I have 6 chick coming later on and I am considering getting a duckling. Do ducks need to be raised in at least pairs? Will it be ok if it is the only duck with chickens for company? I am learning and researching now before I make a decision. Any advice will be greatly appreciated. I have had chicks/chickens before just never a duckling or duck.

I would get a couple more ducks if it were me. I rescued my first duck about three and a half weeks ago and after a week, I got another duck to keep that duck happy (I don't have chickens though!) and they are great. I have a drake and a duck. I don't know if chickens would be enough "company" to a duck. I am sure there are more experienced folks on here who could help, but a trio of ducks (two females, one male) would be great.

We have our flock of Anconas and my mom has one pet duck. this duckling has never been shown the other ducks or anything, but she hatched with a bunch. either way, she thinks my mother is her mother, and she likes it that way. so if you wanted a tame duck/ling to be just your pet, don't let it be with the other chickens.
If you want them as a pet that you don't have to baby, then 4-5 hens per drake is a good mix for ducks.
