Quote: Just go slow and gently, speak softly. Also depends on the breed. There's a great DVD series they teach in Wash. State called Poultry in Motion. You can teach your chickens to do tricks.

Dog trainer , Terry Ryan, created it to teach other dog trainers how to work efficiently with the clicker training method. So folks spend a lot of money to go to her camp and learn how to teach chickens to do tricks using clicker training. Then they go back home and use the methods on dogs. Pretty cool. She put her seminar on a 3 DVD set called Poultry In Motion. You can find it on eBay sometimes for a good price.
Best,

I think it can also depend on the chicken moreso than the age. A number of years ago I had 3 chickens: a hand raised bantam and 2 recsues from a chicken farm. The hand raised one was the least friendly, while the 2 rescues (appx 12 months old when I got them, caged fully until that point with no human contact) became so friendly. One of them was my best friend from day one and would happily let me pick her up and would fall asleep in my arms.
I think they will tame up nicely. With some love and lots of morning coffee visit, they will be fine. Also chickens love a treat so every time you visit bring them something nice to eat and im sure you will win them over in no time.
Good luck :)

Most hens are pretty easy to tame. Just carry around a bucket of scratch grains and they will be your best friends.

Depending on their disposition, once they figure out you are the hand that feeds them, pullets and adults can become very friendly. I have wyandottes that I got as 12 week olds and they are under my feet every time I go out in the yard. And it's b/c I'm the food lady. I can pick up all the pullets easily. My oldest pullet is the only one at this moment that will let me pet her without holding her.
