I live in town. Blessed with tolerant neighbors (mostly), but I wouldn't want to push it with a rooster crowing all day long. Are there any breeds known to be reasonably quiet crowers, or tend to crow less than others? Since bantams are small, do they crow small, too?

I'm envious of all you guys who post pics of your roosters. Like to have one to accompany my hens around the yard, but if I can't, so be it. What you think?

Yeah I kinda feel sorry for you roosterless people

To my experience, banties are no better at the crowing unless they're Seramas. Otherwise, they seem to crow just as loud and more frequently.

Some quiet breeds? Hmmm. . . Don't really know on that one. I guess a less annoying crow, though, would be one of a larger breed. Their crows have a deeper pitch. I've heard from some people that Turkens are relatively quiet when it comes to crow frequency though. And they're such a sweet breed!

Thanks for the info, Illia. My 1st batch of birds several years ago included a Barred Rock cockerel. Beautiful bird, not aggresive at all. Wish we could have kept him (I even named him- big mistake), but he did nothing but crow, about every 2 minutes, ALL DAY LONG. Finally had to eat him. Hated to do it. He was pretty tasty, though.

All in all, I don't want to go through that again

I have a RIR who has a pleasent crow and doesn't crow much at all.
However RIRs do tend to be a bit territorial...

I have a Black sexlink who is buff orp x barred rock and he crows at night, crows more often in the daytime, and doesn't sound as lovely as my RIR. He's not bad though, and is nicer to us people than Red is. I hate to do it, but we may end up eating him since he's not really part of my breeding plans.

I feel your pain. I would just love to have a roo, all the rooster pictures here just have me

I live in the city so roosters are not tolerated, but I want one so bad it's not even funny.
