I uploaded it as a thumbprint but just can't get it to work.

I had that happen one time. Let's go through the steps first:

First, make sure that the image is small. You can shrink it by going to www.shrinkpictures.com and choosing the create avatar link. Then, save the avatar picture to your computer and upload it for your avatar. Don't forget to click save/submit.

If that doesn't work, what I had to do was log off BYC and log back on. Then it showed up. If that doesn't work, I have no clue!

Do you use explorer or firefox? I have both on my computer, and have found it nearly impossible to change it with firefox, but it works just fine in explorer.

On shrinkpictures.com, make sure you change the size from 200 to 100. AND after you change the avatar you have to hit SUBMIT at the bottom of the page or it won't take.
