Hey everybody! I have had some thoughts about my bantam run. I know some of you may have read my other thread about how I was worried the bantams I will be getting would fly over the 4 foot fence I had. But I wanted to ask if a picket fence would work as well. Meaning I take out the 4 foot high fence and put in maybe a 5 or 6 ft picket fence. But I have a few questions on that idea. I know people usually dont have a picket fence for their chicken run, but the area is pretty big for just bantams and they would have plenty of room to run around. But I was wondering, would they want to fly up onto the fence or fly over it? Even if it was 6 ft tall. Would it keep predators out? Or should they be able to see on the other side?

No fence will keep all predators out. Especially ones from the sky. If your birds are good fliers, 5 or 6 foot fence isn't going to keep them in. I have had a leghorn fly at least 14 feet up onto the roof of the house when a dog showed up. Where there is a chicken will, there is a chicken way. They don't have to be able to see what is on the other side to want to or no want to go. They can see a fence and be like, hey, I want to go there, and just go there.

I have had some seriously motivated chickens, chickens who would get out of seemingly impossible enclosures, either by squeezing, digging or flying. If you are worried about flight, clip their flight feathers. Silkiechicken is right that no fence will keep all predators out.
