I plan on breeding my Blue Swede DRake to my Crested & non-Crested pekin hens next year.

Originally i was only doing it for me

... but realized i am going to have way too many babies/eggs if i just let them be to do their bussiness.

so i have been wondering, since ive already had 1 BYC member wanting eggs when theyre ready, Would YOU buy these? Do you think they would sell well?

I have seen a lot of these mixes and just think theyre SO pretty! but not everyone knows!

I wouldn't personally, but I think a lot of folks would. *Most* people who buy ducklings just want something cute and pretty for their pond or backyard, and don't know much about breeds anyway. If I were you, I would post them on craigslist and see what you come up with. It can't hurt, anyway.

Most of the folks on these boards have their own breeding goals in mind, and don't have an interest in other peoples's mixes. But in the wider world, I think lots of people will buy whatever kind of ducklings there are. I've talked to people who had just bought chicks and/or ducklings, and most of the time they don't even have a clue what breed it is. Just that it's cute.

No - I'm one of those people who prefers pure breeds - although I'm happy to sell my own mutt eggs to people who want them as pets/egg layers and don't plan on breeding them. Gotta pay the feed bills somehow, right?

There are quite a few breeds of ducks that have critically low numbers here in the U.S. My philosophy is that I'd rather breed and show those pure breeds to increase their popularity, rather than muddying up gene pools.

But then, I'm also biased against all the heavy breeds, because the only one I have (a rescued McMurray's "Jumbo" Pekin) is EVIL.

I am sorry to admit, I like ducklings because they're cute. I would love a green duck, polka dotted duck, red, brown, white, anything. I currently have one swedish/rouen mix, 2 mallards, 1 pekin (princess Pekin Love who is the sweetest duck in the world), and 2 KCs. Strangely, they are all females, though 3 of them came as mysterious gender babies... so i don't have to worry about making mutts... but my friends have swedish/rouens that have been bred to some kind of runner mix, and I'd happily take one of their babies!

I have plenty of my own designer ducks. We put an ad on CL including that they were mixed breeds and we sold all of them. You may not find the people here on BYC interested, but you will find people that are.

I wouldn't because I select breeds of birds based on their specific qualities, but I do sell alot of mixed-breed chicks (chickens) and get alot of calls for ducks. Most people don't seem to care what they are and have no idea about the breeds anyway.
