Would you recommend raising Guinea fowl in an urban area?

Like all of the others here have said - NO WAY!

My neighbors got 20 of these and they are LOUD. They're down to 3 and... still LOUD. All of the time, no matter what. Plus, their poop smells worse than chicken poop - think of something dead that was dug up from the bottom of the garbage dump. And it's all over my front step, car, and window sills, and patio furniture (guineas typically like to hang out of the neighbors instead of at the owner's). They peck at the paint on the car (oooh, shiny!) and they eat my tomatoes!!! I've learned to sometimes hate my neighbors... but then, if you're in New York and that's your point (to piss off your neighbors) then, yes, you should get guineas.

LOL! Never! I live on 15 acres and my four guinea are SO LOUD and the sound travels forever. Anytime there is a disturbance (car coming down the driveway, strange bird in a tree, people looking through the fence), they freak out. They do make excellent warning birds; when the eagle comes by we hear them start up and can go out and watch. I only have guineas because a person I know bought 30 to get revenge on a neighbor that played their music too loud. 30 was too many for her.

Muscovies are my favorite ducks. However, they can fly very well. If you want them to stay in your city yard you will have to clip the primary - and maybe secondary - flight feathers [NOT pinioning]. Ask your vet how to do this or go to a pet store that specializes in parrots.

Also, there are people who keep ducks and geese as pets in the house. You can actually get harnesses with a place for diaper inserts. Pretty frou-frou! LOL

But if you just want a couple of nice birds to eat your weeds and bugs AND give you eggs, then go with female banty chickens or female muscovy ducks. Put them up at night or whenever you are away from home in a secured pen safe from weather and prying eyes. If you don't mind having them indoors you can turn an extra bathtub into a night time safe place for them. We had a jacuzzi that came with our house that we never used but I raised many baby ducks and geese in it!

Just make sure that whenever they are outside they are safe from wandering dogs and cats.
