Well, as some know....about 6 weeks ago, we got our new Buff Orpingtons. They are all doing great, and we even added 5 EE to the group. We have 13 grown RIR/MIX. After reading on here, that RIR seem to not want to go broody....I attempted a home made bator....that failed...so I bought one, and set 27 eggs...so far....day 14 only lost one.
Today we recieved our new Polish Roo in the mail, he is one year old..named Ben. So very sweet!! Im in love!

While I was out there talking to him, telling him just how beautifull he is...he picked up a piece of straw...and extended it to me..like a gift. IM HOOKED!!!! We chatted for another 30 minutes or so, over some scratch. Well......I was looking for all of my other hens...just back from thier " walk about" when I noticed...Pancake was missing! My only little white hen! I was running all over looking for her...fearing her demise from Tony...the hawk that comes by to "visit" from time to time. Last search..was the coop....when to my surprise....there was Pancake..all puffy...in a trance like state...on a nest. OH NO SHE DIDNT go broody on me!! My current flock is up to 40 and NOW she wants to set.

Oh well.....I guess she will get ONE chance...actually...im a little excited...I was wanting ONE hen to set...about 15 days ago!!!! Now with 27 in the bator...and the 5 week old babies...I am thinking I will HAVE to either win the lottery.....or sell some of the girls and roos...( like THAT will happen! LOL) Come on lucky lottery!!! HURRY!!!

I'm still hooked on the part about the Polish Roo...so cute. I get mine next week with 3 Polish girls... ooooh i can't wait! Oh, and my newest additions (10) will be shipped next week as well...

I told DH that the first 5 i brought home would be all I would get. The next week I came home with 5 more. Then I ordered 10 more. Then I bought the 4 Polish...Lord help me!

..better start looking for more space to fence....

LOL!
I think I'm in love with Ben, too! He sounds like a very special little guy. And I love that he gave you a 'gift'.

As for your hen... that is Murphy's Law in action!! "Ask and you shall receive.. after you've already spent a ton of your time and money.." LOL! It will be exciting to watch her.

And I've decided Mother Hen with tiny chicks is absolutely ADORABLE. They will be fun to watch (and you'll post picks.. right??)

Yes....Pancake is definately broody. sigh!

Now I have to figure out.....when...where...and HOW to move her, without getting eaten up! Ohhh she is moody broody!! This is the first time ever for me to have a broody hen. Of course I will get pics..She is one of my favorite hens! My only white....little Pancake. Who knew Broody hens grew FANGS? WOW, I think someone slipped a pit bull in there and covered it with feathers!

She USED to like me! Come on May 10th! ( her hatch date) I want my sweet little pancake back!

Ben gone bad??? I went out there this morning...to feed everyone...and when I got in there with Ben...gave him his breakfast...and squated down to chat...I talked, he bawked...and ate. Well....I reached out to pet him, and WHAM! he pecked me!!! Why you little booger! I talked to him a few more minutes...and tried again.....KABAM! He flew up at me...thank goodness he has NO SPURS. Why....I oughtta!! So....I told him....listen here Ben...You would taste just as good as any OTHER CHICKEN....he cocked his head sideways..( I just know he understands) and picked up another piece of straw...handed it to me....peace offering.

This one is TRUELY a character! Maybe he was just grumpy, spending his first night out there alone...he has no hens.

I need a few full grown Polish hens...and FAST! I want him to stay friendly. Or, Maybe the hens will make him meaner? Hmmmmmm.

ok, End of day 2.....I let all the other chickens and roos out for thier daily walk about. Poor little Ben, cant leave his enclosure....I just dont trust him to be out.....yet. So...I gather dandylion leaves...grasses..and a few grape leaves....get to his cage..and he is NOT happy. He wants to be out there with the rest. So...I calmly try to talk to him, offering him his treats...then, he just turns his back to me...and POOS! UGH! Now if THAT isnt an insult??? We need to come to a better understanding I think. I am spending LOTS of quality time with our new little Ben...trying to help this city rooster acclimate to the farm life. I think maybe he misses the neon lights of Nevada? Maybe I can find my husbands old beer light..( doesnt most hubbys have one from loooong ago, just HAD to hang on too?) Maybe Ben will settle with the neon light? LOL Another day in the life of The City Roo gone Country!
