The neighborhood has been feeding the lake ducks bread. One muscovy has gotten overweight and landed himself in our yard with a wouned leg..he is dragging it to the side, but mostly sits. We've raised ducks before so have a little experience but are trying to decide best course of action to take with this guy. Should we crate him, feed him right, let him lose a little weight and hope he heals or the alternative? Any input is appreciated.

Can you catch him so you can examine his leg? if it's broken then he'll have to be kept up till it heals and it could be bumble foot which will end up killing him if not treated. Then I would launch a campaign to teach the neighborhood what to feed these ducks. If everyone pitched in to buy proper feed and put up a small covered feeder house [so the feed wouldn't get wet and spoil] everyone including the ducks would enjoy life a whole lot more. Sorry I forgot to say :

Thanks for the reply. It was so tame, we could have caught him but he flew off and some water and snacks. Hoping he's ok but if he comes back, what do we look for with bumblefoot? I think we are going to put some signs up at the lake advising folks to feed the critters the right stuff or don't feed them at all.

While your waiting for him to come back, heres a link to imfo. https://www.backyardchickens.com/search.php?search=Bumble+foot
good idea about posting info, most folks think bread is the norm for feeding any kind of fowl, I have seen people buying day old bread to take home to feed the wild birds
