Batch of 8 chicks, age six weeks. Being raised by momma hen and she is still protective of them. They are on day 5 of being in main run, but sticking mostly together as a group. One chick went to join the rest, but got blocked by the fishing net that the child left out and propped up against the wheelbarrow. Chick starts to make upset cries, but momma hen rushes over and makes barely perceptible noises. I swear she said “Now, calm down” and “back up” because that is exactly what the chick did - she got quiet and not frantic and backed up out of the net and ran around the net to join her hatch-mates. Fascinating!

Yes they are smart. I have a side area that they free range in. I have it covered by netting. I get stuck in it all the time and have to step on it to get unstuck. My rooster is always watching me very intently when I'm working around the pen/coop. One of the girls got stuck just like I do. As I was getting there to help her the rooster got there. Not even kidding..he stepped on that net just like I do and got her out immediately. I was amazed to see that one.

Animals are so awesome!

Ya chickens are smarter than people think. It's awesome watching them.

I waas glad I happened to be there when it happened and saw the interaction. Interesting too bc the momma hen's hormones are waning, so the fact that she ran over to assist the chick was pretty amazing!
