Wyandotte hen died

I found my beautiful Silver laced wyandotte dead in the coop. Her head looked like it was trampled. She was my biggest chicken, so I don't think anyone killed her. She was about 9 months old. What could have happened? Do chickens just suddenly die?

About half of my chickens just die one day, sometimes they look off the day before other times it just happens, and the other half I end up having to cull for something or another, not too many actually spend much time being sick.

A lot of times a chicken will die and the other chickens will jump on it or peck it so they can often look like they were pecked to death but they actually weren't.
