Hey there,

I have have a 2year old lace wyandotte who has never laid eggs. About 2 months ago she started a weird high pitched squeeky noise which still occurs. Since then she has developed further symptoms where she makes a very loud noise whilst she stiffens and stretches her neck and then opens her mouth for about 10 seconds.
Never any eye discharge or other symptoms.

I took her to vet when it began, they thought she was ok, prescribed antibiotics for possible respiratory problem. It didn't go away. I tried gapeworm treatment which I thought may have stopped the frequency of noises but they are back and more frequent.

She still eats and drinks and behaves normally apart from these episodes and the high pitched squeaks sometimes.

Here is a link to a video of it:

Thanks in advance..

What antibiotic and dewormer did you give (product and dose)?

Does she have any swelling or bloat in the abdomen below her vent between her legs?
Any lesions, mucous or white pasty material inside her beak?
Is her crop emptying overnight?

Since this started over 2 months ago, she's 2 years old and she's never laid an egg, she may be suffering from a reproductive issue, but hard to know.

I'm not sure what route you can take if she's been treated with medications and she's not really better or worse, this may be something that you'll have to wait out.

Another thought is:
Feel of her body for any air bubbles (pockets of air) under the skin, especially around where the 9 air sacs are located (see photo below).

Hi There,

Thanks so much for your speedy reply and ideas about her issue. I tried to feel her today, however I can't really feel bubbles however she does not like being held so I could easily have missed something.

When I was carrying her, she was really struggling to breathe and I could hear what sounded like gurgling or indigestion type sounds from the front area of her body.

When I saw the vet a few months back they thought it may have been some respiratory issue and just administered Amoxyclav 200 (14 tablets). I felt she picked up a little at the time. The wormer I gave was VETSENSE Kilvern Poultry Wormer, however I had it in the water system so I am not sure how much she herself ingested. Since both of these her barking (if we can call it that) has progressively been more frequent.

In answer to your other questions, she has never ever laid an egg and there is no white stuff inside or around her beak.
I will try and feel for any swelling and bloating as often as I can. If I do find it, what would be the course of action?

Many thanks again,
Julia

This thread is from August 2022, the Original Poster (OP) has not been on since October, so it's doubtful they will see your question and reply.

If you can start your own thread and explain your own circumstances along with photos of your own birds, their symptoms, etc. We can hopefully make some suggestions to your unique situation.

Thanks!
