What purposes does it serve? And how do I use it?

I'll Google while I wait for your ever-so-knowledgeable responses.

I rescued a hen last year. She had mites, so i used DE to see if it worked. The bugs were not bothered by it at all. I then used poultry dust which was a fraction of the price. Bugs were DONE. I know alot of people on here believe in DE, but i found it useless.

Does it have a brand name or do you ask/look for it as diatomaceous earth? Is Sevin Dust the same stuff? I remember my dad using that stuff on tomato plants when I was a kid and it sounds like it might be the same thing...

There are a few uses for DE. Keep in mind that there are two kinds, pool grade and food grade. From what I understand, it can be used for what is call the "deep litter method". That is when you layer wood chips and DE inside the coop to elinminate the need to change the bedding so often, as a plus it keeps down the bugs and dries the chicken poo.
Some people also use it in thier chicken food as a natural wormer. My chickens aren't to that stage yet, so I haven't tried to worm them.
