Traveled up to Syracuse this weekend for a real adventure! I took Miss Rosaline, my White Sultan pullet, to show, and because I'm not yet an *adult*, she was entered in the 4-H part. I got my hen settled and looked at the other birds. When I came back, the judge was checking her over and as he walked away, he commented on her number card. The words, "Nice bird" and "Best AOTB" were now on the card. AOTB is of course "All Other Standard Breeds". Later, I was reading my Showmanship instructions and the judge now wrote "Champion Large Fowl" on my Sultan's card.
A different judge tested me for the showmanship part. That was very nerve wracking. I ended up tie-ing with 2 other people for first place!!!!! We had to answer several other questions about chickens in general. In the end, I won first place Showmanship!!!
I took home a Purple ribbon for Champion Large Fowl and a Blue ribbon for first place Showmanship. AND as a bonus prize, I brought home these, provided by one of he judges to the 1st place junior Showmanship winner!
Him:
And his mate!
They're Silver Penciled Plymouth Rock bantams. The male is just a cockerel-less than a year old. And the female is a year and a half year old hen. The first thing Mr. Rooster did was bite me.
And the hen sized me up right away! Both obviously haven't been around people. The hen had WAY over-grown toe-nails, which I just trimmed, and I think the male might have worms, which I'm treating him for now. They are separated.
My Sultan is from Meyer hatchery. I'm proud to say my hatchery bird took first place in 2 different competitions for 4-H. She did much better than I could have hoped for.
And Rosaline herself, the little hatchery bird who could. Please excuse her messiness. After she came home from the fair, I didn't care what she looked like.
Her fancy feet:
I'll try to take pics of the ribbons later. How could I forget them?
