Hello Backyardchicken Community!

I am fairly new to raising chickens, it’s been about a year and a half. I have used this site to answer so many questions but never engaged. Figured it’s time!

I currently have three chickens. A Buff Orpington named Artemis, Australorp named Tamesine, and an Easter Egger named Suvlin. These three chickens also live with our two dogs and cat. Everyone seems to get along pretty well :)

I have been struggling with one thing though, maybe someone could help? My Australorp was VERY broody through the summer and it seems as though her breast/belly feathers still have not grown back. Her skin looks fine, no redness, swelling, or signs of infection. But...the feathers still aren’t growing back and I don’t see any signs of new ones coming in! And, as winter approaches in Montana it gets cold, I am a little worried these feathers won’t grow back. Any thoughts on what I could do to help her?! I will also try reposting this in another thread, any thoughts as to what group I should repost to?

Thanks so much! Looking forward to engaging in the community!

Is she by chance molting? That wouldn't be unusual this time of year. If that's not it, maybe upping the protein in her feed would help. You could try posting here to get more input:

Hope you find an answer. Thanks for joining us!

Hi NFC,
Thanks for your response. No, she’s not molting yet. But, she certainly needs to get to it since winter is coming! I have upped the protein with a “feather fixer” feed. I’m hoping that will work? She was broody pretty much all summer, despite my best efforts. I’ll check out the other forums you suggested. Thanks again!

If she pulled her own feathers, they may not grow back until she goes through a mult..
How old is she?
Hi RonP,
She is about year and a half old. She did pull her own feathers and spent a majority of the summer broody (despite my best efforts). I don’t have a rooster so there will never be chicks, poor girl. But, she has yet to go through her molt for the winter yet. I did start higher protein with a feather fixer added to their feed. She just hasn’t had any feathers there since the summer, for the most part!!
