We have four red production hens about 17 weeks and four Easter Eggers about 16 weeks. I found a soft shell egg yesterday and DH found one in a hole in the chicken run (we JUST finished priming and sealing the cabinet to hold their nesting boxes the same day).

I am not sure which ones layed, but the hard shell egg is pretty small and a nice brown color so I am guessing one of the "Reds" layed it :)

Now we have an old kitty litter box with straw and two 5 gallon buckets with straw for them to sit in. I hope they get the idea, we were not expecting to see eggs, but EGGSTATIC about the very first one :)

I will post photos, the EE's are actually looking like bigger body birds than a couple of the Reds which I find surprising.

Congrats!! I always tell my husband that people will probably think we are crazy because 4 covered cat boxes that we use as nesting boxes. They were free and all it took was some scrubbing/disinfecting to get them good as new :)
