So I went outside about twenty minutes ago to go visit the chimmikins and love on them, well, I caught my little light brown dutch bantam hen in the act of laying her first egg! I waited around out of sight, and shortly I heard her clucking, and all the excited peeping of her cheerleaders, and then my RIR rooster, the head honcho, General Lee, belted out a series of "proud papa" crowing. So I waited a couple minutes til she was scratching around in the yard, and there it was in the nestbox. Small, but beautiful. Two perfect first eggs two days in a row! Whee!
