My buff Orpington hen has some sort of small, yellow bumps on the inside of the bottom of her beak, on either side of her tongue. I don't know what they could be, they may have been there for a while: the hens don't like it when I look in their mouths. They aren't weeping or anything like that. I don't think that they are bothering her; she's pretty vocal about things that bother her. Does anyone have any ideas on what these things could be? Thanks!

If you are sure it isn't clumps of food stuck in her beak/throat (you'd be amazed how much they can look like something they aren't), then it could be canker. It's contagious, I understand. I'm not sure of anything else it might be except maybe wet pox, but that would be really nasty and she'd probably have wet, weeping eyes, etc, too.

This brings to mind a photo that a BYC member posted a long time ago of a chicken's wide open beak/mouth. I seem to recall that there were bumps near the back of the throat that were perfectly normal chicken mouth anatomy. My memory is vague on this. Perhaps I should go home and look in my chicken's mouths to confirm.... Anyway, just a thought.
