Yellow poo

Hi, I'm Liz, and very new to chicken keeping.

Two weeks ago, we bought 4 chickens at POL, but one of them, a White Star, is doing very yellow poo. The others are fine. She is not laying yet, and at first we thought it would be to do with her skittish nature from her breeding line, and being upset by the stress of the transport home. Then we thought it was something to do with egg yolk, but now we are not sure.

We asked at the place we got the birds from and were advised to give natural yoghurt. Which we have done, and it has improved the poo of the other 3 no end. However, Penny still is giving us quite sloppy, yellow poo.

Please can anyone suggest anything?

I would start with taking a sample to the vet to be checked for parasites.

That bird needs to be checked by a vet for disease. The following is from the Mississippi State Poultry department web site.


Sulfur yellow... Blackhead
Light yellow or yellowish-green... Fowl typhoid; fowl cholera

Thanks for your advice guys. I have collected a sample, but just one thing before I go off with it...

I phoned the place we got the chickens from and the lady there said that about 1 in every 10 poos from a bird will be different to 'regular' poo. Do you think that it could be this?

I followed up links to cholera and blackhead and stuff like that, and the poos don't look like those shown, and the weird thing is that the birds have no other symptoms, and are as perky and happy looking as can be. I think I am going to have trouble finding an avian vet, and wanted to be sure about this 1 in 10 poo thing before I travel 40 miles for nothing! (oh wouldn't it just be a Friday! why does it always happen at the weekends?)

(all my collected info on "poo" with lots of good general info on the subject ) concerning your yellow poo>though yellow usually indicates a parasite infestation in addition to the above I have these references for you (however the only way to reasonably know what you may be dealing with is a faecal at a vets):

It is true that the have a poo called a cecal poo and it will be kind a running and different color. It is a cleansing poo where they are flushing toxins and such out of their system.
