I obtained a yellow male golden today, but didnt manage to snag a hen, im looking for one locally now,as i dont want to pen him by himself. i do know where i can get a couple red golden hens, And assuming they would most likely breed, what would i expect from the offspring?

Yellow is recessive to Red, So all will look Red but will be split Yellow. If you breed the splits to each other 25% Yellow, 50% Red/Yellow, 25% Red. It is just easier to get Yellow hens. What do you sell all the splits as? 2nd generation, unless you test breed what about the 75% that look red but 2/3 are splits? The one person I knew that did this sold to Taxidermists and dog trainers as then he knew they would not be used in a breeding program.

oh im not planning on selling any of said "mixed" chicks. Very few people around me raise goldens, i bought this yellow male today at mount hope, he was the last golden sold and a bit of an impulse buy. I will be picking him up some ladies this fall for sure, but dont want to keep him penned separately from my reds all summer.

If you have a way to get rid of the crosses or plan on not selling it is a good way to get stronger blood back into your Yellow line. If you was to breed a Yellow back to a split you should get 50% yellow and 50% Red/yellow.
