I have read about giving your chickens yogurt, and stuff like that. I am just wandering how too give it to them, and how much? I have about 10 chickens, and 10 chicks( 2mths old)-not together. Is it okay to give the chicks some too? I currently feed my grown chickens 1 feeder tray of laying pellets, 1 feeder tray of crumbles, and toss some crushed corn around for them to scratch around on. Of coarse the chicks are still getting grower feed available 24/7. I just wandered with all that if yogurt is even needed? I also just started adding some oyster shell to the feed. Thanks for any input!

I don't think yogurt is "needed" but is given as a treat and some people tout the beneficial bacteria. For my chicks at a few weeks old, I put a scant teaspoon or less for each chick on a couple of saucers, spacing blobs out so each chick would have access, then sprinkled a bit of chick feed on top of the yogurt. They were hesitant at first but now love it. I just give a couple of times a week. Of course, they love to stand in it, get it all over each other and the cage, etc.

One more chance to train them to come to the chook, chook, chook treat call, which it only takes about one time to learn.

When the weather is cooler I make the gals oatmeal and spread it out on a few paper plates, then lightly "frost" it with yogurt. They go NUTS... very entertaining watching them sling yogurt all around!

I give yogurt and cottage cheese to the adults to supplement their calcium. They love it. Especially if you mix a little scratch feed or bird seed in it.
