Yogurt question

Ok, my little girlies are 6 days old today. I went to the grocery store and brought them Stoneybrook Farms organic plain nonfat yogurt. Are they old enough to give it to them yet or do I wait another week? I remember reading that the live cultures are good for the little guys. Since they are on medicated feed I thought it would be a good idea. Also, if they are old enought to eat the yogurt do they need supplied with grit? If so I will wait and get parakeet grit from the pet store tomorrow night.

they will need grit once they start to free range and eating things like grass etc.
I give yogurt from day one.

Thanks! I did not think they needed grit with the yogurt. Just wanted to be sure. I think this morning they will get some mash made out of the starter, warm spring water and yogurt! Yummy!

It did not go as I thought it would. I was so excited to give them their treat and they were scared to death of it! Would not even try it. So I finally got some of the yogurt on my index finger and touched each one of their beacks. So I think they got a little bit!

Be patient. It took my girls a few times before they tried yogurt too. Try mixing just a smidgen of the yogurt with their chick starter. Make sure it is still plenty crumbly. That is how mine finally went for it, then I added a little more yogurt the next time.

Remember they don't have a momma hen to teach them. You are the momma hen now. Sprinkle some of their crumbles over the yogurt so they will learn it is food.

I figured it would take some time! I will offer it again. Maybe it was too mushy from them.

How often to I offer the yogurt?

MissPrissy- Looked at the yogurt recipe. It sounds easy enough. I have jars for when I make my jam. What I do not have is powdered milk or a candy therometer. I will have to invest in these things. It will save money in the long run!

They can have yogurt every day. Just sprinkle the crumbles over top and they will associate it with food.
