Hello everyone, hope you can give me good tips.
I have a young rooster, about one year old. Now unfortunately my flock was really small (had about 3 chickens with one adult, very caring towards his chickens-rooster) and when "Flash" (the young rooster) started to grow up (you know started to sing) the others started bullying him, so he became somewhat shy. Maybe a month or two ago his dad really started to chase and try to beat him up; they all free range in a moderately big enough space (9.8 acres), we also put feed for them, but in a little while we'll have to limit them to a smaller area (1.2 acres). We were thinking of making two separate flocks and just yesterday we were able to get 9 young hens (some are already laying, all from the same place).
Forgot to mention that when we started to help Flash he became so used to us that he always stays near our house and allows us to grab him an pet him (he's a sweet heart) never likes to fight, he just runs and hides if he sees his dad, and we're usually there in the middle to avoid confrontation.
So anyways yesterday we put all the hens with Flash and I was wondering is there a "normal" time in which he might choose to mate with them. His dad "Champion" walked by and eyed the hens, don't know if it'd be better to give him some since right now he has 4 in his flock (one of them raising 4 day old chicks) I also worry that the preexisting flock might bully the new ones...
What do you all recommend? What'd be the ideal thing to do? I read that any new members should be allowed an enclosed space for two weeks before introduction...
