Hi, I’m hoping someone can help.
I have a young peacock/hen that I moved into a stable with its mother on the 4th of November because it was a late hatch and wasn’t coping with the bad weather. Everything seemed fine at first, but last week the chick started losing its balance and rolling over on itself.
I wasn’t sure if the issue might be diet-related. None of the local feed shops (Gladwells or Moles) stock game feed, so I’ve been mixing my own. Because of this, I wondered if its diet might be lacking something. I bought chick crumb—the highest protein available was 20%—as I’m not sure how old the chick is. I’ve also been giving berries, other fruits, and calci-worms.
Could its diet be causing these problems?
The chick has definitely grown and seems generally healthier, but this morning I found it upside down and thought it had died. I syringed some water into it and then mixed some crumb with water and syringed that in too. This evening it seems much better, but it’s still doing this strange running-around-and-falling-over behaviour. It can walk normally, but if it tries to move faster, it just flips over.
I can’t see or feel any lumps, bumps, or injuries.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
