I grind my chick starter in a coffe grinder for my Serama chicks(as per another BYCer) and it works great. After losing 2 clutches that were outside with broodies I've started taking the hen and chicks indoors as soon as they are all hatched. They would all do really well outside for the first week or two and then start dropping off. So far this new method has been working well for me. Aside from the ground up chick starter, I also put a bit of the hand feeding formula powder in the ground up starter. I also give them boiled egg yolk and I buy dried meal worms from PetSmart, crunch them up and give them that...which they LOVE. I have two Mama's sharing 7 tiny chicks right now and so far all are doing great. Fingers crossed. Good luck with yours
