I liked not having blood everywhere; that is what I liked about the dispatcher. What I disliked about the dispatcher (on the first two birds) was that I felt it paralyzed them, but did not kill them. On the 3rd bird, I used it to crush the head, knew it was dead instantly, and then used it the normal way to break the neck, which left a cavity into which the blood could pool as it hung upside down.
My dad made me a small "gambrel" which holds their feet, so now I won't even have to tie their feet before I hang 'em and skin 'em.
I was thinking about Miss Prissy's comment about the delay in processing while waiting for flopping to stop. She said she is probably going to do the cone thing, and I realized that with cones, people are processing chickens which might have been dead for 20 minutes or more. For my skinning technique, the warmer they are, the easier they are to skin, and I am going to continue to dispatch them one at a time, even if it means an extra 3-4 minutes while they flop.
All of that said, my favorite tool(s) are my dispatcher, my "hanging tree", and my Cutco knives. I have 2 Cutco hunting knives and 2 Cutco kitchen knives, and they stay sharper than any other knives I've ever had (Gerber, Schrade, Buck, and Kershaw, among others).
