your thoughts on flock block from purina

we just got one of these and i want to know if anyone else uses these. we have regular layer crumbles for them and also a blend of grains that we mix. is it bad if they eat too much flock block?

BUMP..... I found this post while searching about Purina Flock Block, just wanted to see what kind of input it would get. (weird that nobody responded to it in 2007) I am leaving for 4 days next week and although I have someone coming to feed all my animals, I wanted to leave a Flock Block out for my chickens "just in case". Next time I will follow the other posts recipes for making my own flock block from scratch. If you have a new recipe please post it too. Thanks in advance!

Saw this while looking for other info, but I did use the flock block, and my birds ignored it. Squirrels loved it.

Then it rained...

The flock block was in the uncovered run. The molasses, once wet, began to break down in the heat almost immediately. The stank was the most unbelievable thing ever, like beer gone bad with a box of gingerbread cookies soaking in it.

Squirrels wouldn't even eat it.

We scooped it up and added it to the compost tumbler, which stunk for a couple of days and then broke it down, but GEEZ!!!

It's a great idea, but LORDY! It's just no worth it unless you have 15 or more birds who are bored silly without anything else to do, in a weather protected environment where no squirrels will join the mess.

We have gotten them for the winter months when the birds got mouthy. Don't know if it helped with the pecking (pinless peepers solved that problem) but the birds LOVED them.

Only trouble was they could demolish one in about a week, and it cost the same as a bag of feed. I was considering trying to make one if I could do it cheaper, because they definitely liked it.

We have one and they enjoy it outside in the run. They seem to still eat the layer feed that is in the coop. We have 10 hens and a rooster and they have been eating on it for 3 weeks about 1/2 gone. We put a 5 gallon bucket over it at night just to make sure something doesn't try to dig under the fence and get at it. I got two of them on sale - buy one get one free. When you do the math kind of expensive. But I do like it and the girls and guy seem to also.
