For those of you who know my wonderful crippled rooster, Zane, here's an update. He has no infection in the hock still, thank goodness, and he is crowing his heart out a few times a day. When our weather went down to two degrees and then eight the next night, even though he had a heatlamp, he got frostbite on two comb tips as you can see in the picture. Poor boy can't snuggle with anyone, so he has to have a heat lamp for warmth on nights like that. His comb has gotten very dry, though my DH has rubbed it with oil a couple times. He's still my sweet baby Zane-see those bright, kind eyes?

Today, it was sunny and warm and he had lots of time on the deck in his playpen.A friend requested a pic of me with Zane back before I broke my ankle and I've just now been able to come in contact with my birds again, so here's me and Zane, two crippled comrades:

I am so glad to hear you are up and around! And that Zane is doing ok. I'll bet he was glad to see you! Thank you so much for the update.

I'm so happy that you and Zane both got to get out in the sunshine today, I could cry!

You both just look so wonderful and I know the Zaner is so happy to have his human mommy back!

Thanks so much for posting and sharing these pictures. It has truly brightened my day.

Mahonri, he could probably mate still, if he had a willing hen. Gypsy was in the playpen with him for a few minutes today. He talked and talked to her and shared his food with her. They are quite a pair! I cant leave her in with him because I think it's just too crowded with the way he has to get around, using his wings as crutches, but if he was in the right position to grab her, she'd squat for him. They are a chicken love story!
I was thrilled to hold Gypsy in my lap today, too. I missed her so much and she held so still, I think she missed me, too. My banty Cochin, Shadow, was in my lap, too, and her comb is finally bright red and larger-I think she'll lay any day now, finally!

I am almost weepy with joy at being able to hold my birds again. Can't go down to the coop, so my wonderful hubby has to go get them for me, but I was so happy today. Tomorrow, he'll bring my Charlotte, Gypsy's mama, up to visit with me and I cant wait. I am completely in heaven with my flock, they mean so much to me.
