Can I use 1" x 1" galvanized wire mesh 16 gauge wire on my run (they are only out during the day, no fox/coyotes) or do I need to do the 1/2 hardware cloth? I plan on using larger wire fencing for the top 3 feet but on the bottom 3 feet I was going to use something more predictor proof. We do have racoons in this area, but I have not seen any since we moved almost a year ago...I think that has to do with our location to a large wooded (but tall fenced) dog park. haha.
Anyways, so lets pretend racoons can get over here. Chickens will be out from dawn to dusk, then locked back up in their coop. About to buy my wire, and obviously the 1" x 1" galvanized wire mesh 16 gauge wire is much less expensive, but I don't want to put them in any jeopardy.
That's kinda what I thought, but I didn't want to disagree. I remember from my piercing/tatoo days that the lower the number the fatter it is haha. I ended up just doing the hardware cloth for the bottom 3 feet, but will be doing the galvanized wire fencing for the top 3 feet.16 gauge wire is actually quite heavy. Remember that the small the gauge number, the thicker the wire.
