Raccoon attack *yesterday* - eyes closed, wet breathing, no interest in food/water - no improvement

TLC is about all you can do at this point. Try to wipe off any thick secretions. Keep her warm and in a quiet room with close access to food and water in case she wants it. Antibiotics probably would not hurt, but may not help much if she has a lot of internal injuries. It's OK to just keep her...

Did my chickens lay this?? a Black egg?!

Never seen a black egg nor heard of a breed laying it. Does any of it wash off? I'd have to crack it open to see what was inside. I doubt it's a wild bird or a reptile.

8 weeks old chicks, medicated vs unmedicated feed

I keep mine on medicated crumbles until they are about 8 weeks. Then they get flock raiser pellets with the rest of the chickens.

What treat did your chickies get today?

Oranges. They are coming out of our ears here in Florida. So many, that I tossed a few in the chicken pen. They cleaned them up with nothing left but the peels.

    HELP!!! WITH MY ROOSTER!!

I have a Silkie Rooster (about 4 months old) that get knocked on his back and cannot get back up. He is perfectly fine otherwise. On his back, his wings come out and he cannot get his feet down to flip back over. I suspect yours may have gotten shuffled off the roost and just could not get back up.

    Speckled brown egg question

It could be either. Eggs can and do change in shade or speckles. Or you have a new layer. Only way to tell for sure is see who comes out of the box after the egg is laid or see it being laid.

Broody Hen Sitting on Rotten Eggs

You might give her another week. Some of the eggs may have been added after she started sitting. You could also candle them. (there are tons of candling pics here and on the web to compare) If they look clear, probably infertile. If you see blood vessels or movement, could still hatch. If they...

Using a first time broody to hatch some eggs!

now would be a good time to candle as you should see good blood vessels and movement before chicks get too big. if you don't see anything, don't panic and throw everything out. give it a few more days and repeat. it's is such a great feeling when you see those litle babies moving in the shell...

    Cock-a-doodle-do

I, too, got an unintended Silkie rooster. I was going to get rid of him, but he was just such a mild mannered little guy, I kept him. He is now nearly a year old and he is a great rooster. He's not aggressive and treats his hens well. He also sounds the alarm when he sees someting flying in the...

Using a first time broody to hatch some eggs!

She will leave the nest to eat and drink and poop when she sees fit. Leave her be. They don't need to be taught how to be mothers. It's instinct.

    combining feeds?

You can also feed their shells back to them for added calcium. Mine prefer that to the oyster shell.

    When will she lay?

Mine started laying less than 1 week after the rooster started breeding them. So maybe he knows they are close. You can feed them the extra calcium and the egg shells from store eggs. They wil eat it if they need it. No need to wash the eggs unless a lot of poop or dirt on them. I moisten a...
