What on earth killed our chickens?

I am almost done tryhing to keep guineas......

I’ve had guineas for five years. I still have two from the original batch. They are free rangers but I try to get them in every night. They get white millet for a treat. Still have to herd some of them in. The stupid ones don’t last too long. But I think they are worth the trouble. Just had my...

    Our sick chicken

So very sorry. I lost one of my favorites not long ago and have another sick one that won't make it too much longer. Hate it.

    Nesting

Guineas lay in a common nest. When there are lots of eggs one of them will decide to brood. They are not very good mothers.

What are you candling with? I use a very strong led flashlight and can see easily at 5 days. You should be able to see the veining.

Guinea keet update. So far my broody hen has seven babies, one egg "fixin' to hatch and one more waiting. So the question is what happened to the 10th egg/keet? I think it managed to get out of the enclosure and couldn't get back to mom and someone ate it. Someone being the other chickens...

My broody hen is a new momma today! She is sitting on 10 Guinea eggs. Saw two keets peeking out. Way early from what I thought should be hatch day, but there they are. We'll see how many others hatch and if she can raise any successfully. First time I've done this. Do you help at all by...

My marans broody on the job. 2 weeks in and 2 to go. 10 guinea eggs. As promised (to myself), i haven't messed with them other than to check for extras every day. I'd love to candle them BUT I'M NOT GOING TO DO IT! She's been a good mama so far.

    Nipple watering

Thanks everyone for the input. I think the first thing will be better buckets. I do have the waterers inside the coop away from the sun and up on bricks. Will need to make a trip to the big city to get to a lowes or Home Depot.

"Springing in the Chicks" 2016 April Hatch-a-Long Hosted by Mike & Sally

I just performed an eggtopsy on my quitter guinea egg. Had feathers and had absorbed a lot of the yolk. fully developed feet. Its problem was a deformed head and beak, so I think it was alive for almost full time, but would never have been able to hatch. Thankfully I'm not posting a...

Final update on my guinea hatch. Six little peanuts all fuzzy and healthy. Was hoping for a pied bird, but all pearls. One eggbert that was a quitter. I've left it in the incubator, but no cheeps, movement or pips. I did a water test yesterday and didn't see any movement. I'll test...

    Nipple watering

I bought new contractor buckets at ACE hardware store. I think its just poor quality plastic. I need to talk with my husband and see if he wants to try the pvc pipe route or buy some better buckets.
