Older EE hen sounds like a goose

One of my EE hens around 7 years old sometimes sounds like a goose while breathing. Soft sounding, not loud. She doesn't do it all the time. She doesn't show any other signs of sickness. Bright, good appetite, active, no signs of mites or parasites. Any thoughts?

You call that egg a large huh? Hold my beer!

I was going to say it might be from your comet. My neighbor has 3 comets and their eggs are all beyond jumbo.

    Broodiness Cycle

Coop is too small for a separator. Either hens lose access to the door or boxes. I'm just not going to try eggs naturally again. I'll just separate the broodie to break her broodiness.

    Broodiness Cycle

My coop has 6 nest boxes. I put the eggs in the least used box. My broody was not at all aggressive. The eggs were broken when she went out for her quick food and water break. Then they disappeared.

    Broodiness Cycle

I tried the fertilized eggs route wirh my broody. All eggs ended victims of my other hens. Not doing that again. She'll just have to go to jail each time.

    Pullet not laying

I have an eight month old welsummer who's still not laying. But I'm not 100% sure shes not laying. I thought I had a small egg from her months ago. But no more. Also she goes through these periods of being lethargic, then I find the remnants of an egg shortly after and she's back to normal...

Aggressive and nicest breeds of chicken?

I just sold my 2 RIR because they were so nasty. (I don't have roos) They were great layers, but never again. My EEs and Welsummer are my nicest.

Comment by 'closetfan' in article 'Red Fox - Chicken Predators - How To Protect Your Chickens From Foxes'

I lost 7 of 12 in Dec. I took my dogs with me for a week's vacation, came back and they were gone. So much for free ranging. They are now back in their dog pen. I have an Amish made henhouse with electric door. Then a 10x10' dog pen, wrapped with an extra roll of chicken wire. Chicken wire...

Topic of the Week - What do you do with all those eggs?

Whatever my dogs and I don't use are given away to firends and family. ANd if there are still some left over I sell them at work. Work ends June 30 so I'm either going to do the honor syster out front of my house or take a drive to the "old" workplace and sell them to the customers I had at...

    Dumb question

I have a flock of 8 hens. 6 EEs, a silver laced Wyandotte and araucauna. I'm not interested in having a rooster. But I can "rent" one for a while if I wanted to get some fertile eggs to increase my flock. Dumb questions. How long should I keep a roo? And what eggs would be fertilized...

    Do hens crow?

This has happened twice. About a month ago I thought I heard crowing, but when I looked outside I just saw my hens and by that time it sounded more like a complaining hen who was hoarse. This morning I heard it again and looked outside for maybe a wayward rooster. There was none. But one of...

less than 2 yr hold hen not laying

Ok, it's now mid April, we have 50-70 degree weather. She laid about 1/2 doz eggs since the beginning of this post. Not a prolific layer at all. All the Easter Eggers are going to town with laying. I have a total of 5 hens. The BA and 4 EEs. I am getting 3-4 green eggs a day. Maybe 1 brown...
