dog kennel or hardware cloth run.

Really nice dog pen. I have one now that I want to convert for my girls. What did you use to attach the hardware mesh? and top?

    Free Ranging Chickens

Forgot to mention...we get them back into the pen before dark. Don't want to deal with predators.

    Free Ranging Chickens

I trained mine to come to the sound of me calling them and shaking BOSS in a can! Works like a charm! I only let one or two out at a time in the beginning but now they all go out to free range.

How To Keep Chickens Out of Flower Beds and Gardens

So far I've been lucky! They like to go into the veggie garden but they only scratch between the plants! Helps me with the weeding!!!

Combining flocks, moving younger chicks to the coop

This sounds exactly like me this past weekend!

Intoducing new chicks to existing flock

Thanks! I decided to integrate the girls this past weekend. It was only "ugly" for the first few minutes and then it seemed okay! They were pecking a little bit but not like it was last week. I bought a "pecker wrecker" block and hung it up in the pen for diversion! Not sure if it actually...

    Introducing new chicks

I'm going through this right now. I have two new (and young) girls (Amercaunas) that I have been keeping separate from the rest of the flock due to pecking. Finally just integrated them this weekend. It was ugly at first but as of this morning they are okay. They've been spending a lot of...

Intoducing new chicks to existing flock

I'm looking for some advice as well.... I have 6 laying hens (between 1 and 2 yrs old). Just got 2 Amercauna pullets that are now approx 16 weeks old (I've had them for approx 10 weeks). It has been very difficult to add them to the existing flock. They go outside at the same time and have...

Intoducing new chicks to existing flock

I've been concerned about this too! I have 6 hens approx 1 yr old and now have 2 additional 7 week old pullets. I have been putting them in the coop and pen in a separate "dog kennel". I don't have another coop and don't plan on building another one. My "older girls" have been very curious...

Thanks for all the good info. This is my first year with my chickens so I'm still trying to figure this stuff out so they survive in CT.

Maybe something to insulate the bottom of the boxes would help. I was thinking about adding some indoor/outdoor carpet cut to fit during the coldest days of the winter.

I purchased battery operated strands of lights (like Christmas lights) from QVC. They have a timer that can be set to come on the same time each day.

    Lighting

Thanks! I was wondering the same thing. This is our first winter with the girls so I don't want them to freeze! I purchased battery operated LED lights on a timer that I was planning to put in the coop this weekend. They don't add any heat so I was going to also use a light bulb. We've had...

light with a timer battery operated

I just purchased the Bethlehem battery operated strands of lights without the garland. They were on sale last week! I haven't installed them yet because my girls are still getting enough light. I plan to set the lights up this weekend. Have you ever used the lanterns?
