    Mutts

Here is an update of the little chick a few pages back......told you that he changed as he got older! Big difference - huh! He's got a little dried blood on his comb from fighting with a new up and coming roo. Actually a brother that is colored like him but more clean with the red /...

Project Eggs coming soon. Anyone willing to buy the following crosses?

I did a black Jersey roo with an orphington....well....it was either him or the black australorp roo. Several of the babies looked like RIR's on the neck and head and wings.....had red/orange breasts (some with black specks).....and black tails and under the wings up to the back. Beautiful...

    Questions on slaughtering / butchering...

Was the rigor mortise an issue? Should I have been quicker or let them sit longer before freezing them? This is most likely the biggest culprit. I like to let sit in the fridge for at least two days, up to four. If rigor mortise could be an issue....we likely froze it at the right (WRONG)...

    Questions on slaughtering / butchering...

Quote: I got to sit down and actually watch the video tonight. It's one of the best i've seen yet (minus the wind noise). They make it look even easier than what I was doing....and we weren't that far apart. It was especially helpful in the gutting area. I had help there and never really...

    Questions on slaughtering / butchering...

Quote: Any details on cutting the throats? Just slice one jugglar? Slice all the way across? Take the head? Anyone ever hear of or experience the "adrenaline runing the meat" thing? I'm guessing my wife was right and that the bird was closer to a year old. She usually is right (don't...

You guys are great! Thanks for all the advice. I'll take all of it I can get. I've been skinning the birds....but will likely pluck the turkey and freeze him. Same 6 month window with turkeys? He's getting close. The way the price of Milk, meat, and gas is going.....I want to get as self...

    Questions on slaughtering / butchering...

I slaughtered 3 roosters (my first attempt)....I don't remember exactly when....but my wife thinks they were about a year old. I was thinking 6 months...but she's likely right. I took a hand hatchet and cut off their heads. It was harder than I thought. It took several swipes to get the head...

Rooster with Raccoon Damage ~ permanent hole in head

We had a roo that had a hole in the skin on the crown of his head. It naturally wanted to pull open and you could see his skull. I had hen that had a hole in her side....don't know why. It was the size of a 50 cent piece. You could see her ribs and muscles. I could even stick a finger in...

New chicks scare me, wish someone would have told me.

    are these roosters?

Well.....they look like roosters to me. But even for hens they would still be on the young side for eggs just yet.
