My 8 laying hens are over a year old and are now free ranging all day for the past couple of weeks.
Only 2 are coming back to the coop to lay their eggs.
I've been thinking of locking them up for a couple of days just to remind them of where they need to lay. It's great having the feed bill...
I had a similar problem.
I would go to collect my eggs and find they had been "tasted"....so I put the wooden eggs in there with them. They stopped "tasting" the eggs they laid.
After a while it began again, but this time, there was actual eatting going on instead of the peck of "tasting". I...
I'm having a problem very similar to yours. I have some layers over a year old and some chicks around 3 months old. I put a "mini" run on the end of our regular run and let the chicks stay there for a while to get everyone acquainted with each other through the fence.
The mini run is...
I'm having this same problem. I have 6 silkies, 2 EE and 2 Polish, and they all run like the dickins when I even walk by the brooder. I have no idea what the problem is.
The lady I got them from said they were all very docile and not flighty (very good breeder) and I have no reason not to...

My DD let them out once and then went back in the house to play the Wii. They ate my collards, snacked on my radishes and browsed through my cabbage and lettuces.
Stay with them. It's the best way if you can't fence.
I have everything I need to make Casteel - except the lye. I'm looking, looking, looking for a local place. There are a couple of smaller towns I'm going to check out before I break down and buy off line. I prefer to avoid that if possible.
I'm nervous/excited about jumping in! I've been...
I boil some of my smaller eggs to eat them at lunch (I brown bag it to work). I'll usually give them some of those if I have to many. Otherwise, they generally don't get any since there's not a lot of surplus going around at my house LOL. Chopped fine. When they get older, I just chop 'em...
Sorry you got spurred!
but thanks to the others with advice on how to remove the spurs! I should get a rooster out of my chicks this year and have no urge to be spurred...or my children.
THANK YOU!!!
