Thanks. I will contact you once it gets closer to June. Really interested in getting a couple more either through hatching eggs or possibly another pair or two.
I didn't have much luck with hatching eggs. Spent about $300 for 10 eggs and managed to get 1 hatch which died a week later. Most of what I read online stated to start with mealworms, etc. In talking with the gentleman that I purchased the pair from, he states that it is just a matter of dipping...
I managed to get a young pair of mearns quail in August. Paid $400. I guess that's not bad considering hatching eggs are still selling for $30 each. Figured I would post a picture as they are almost 6 months old now and coloring up nicely.
Just moved 8 Serama eggs from the turning tray to the hatching box in my GQF incubator. Started out with 25 eggs. Keeping my fingers crossed that I get at least 4 to hatch.
I've noticed that if I have more than 1 male in the cage, the two males will chase each other around and stress the females. This also causes them to lay less in my experience. Not sure why they would be stressed though with only 1 male. Changing environments on them will do it also. I moved...
Sounds like you are treating them good. During very hot days, I change the water once or twice and put in fresh cold water. They are very tough birds and I'm sure they will adapt. Being retired military, it takes our troops several weeks when we deployed to adjust to the higher temps. I'm sure...
I think they are as close to golden eggs as you can get. I seen this morning that a different seller on eBay has them for $360 ( 6 eggs). Apparently not many breeders around. I've found a couple hatcheries that sell the adult birds, but they go for $600+ a pair. I suppose a lot of it has to do...
This may sound crazy, but I also breed fancy guppies and use a high quality flake food of 48% protein to increase the protein content of my feed. The quail love it and its easy to crush and mix with the feed.
I had the same issue. Before finding a local feed store that supplies 26% protein feed, I was adding flake fish food to my chick starter. I know it sounds crazy, but I also raise show guppies and sell a lot of Brine Shrimp Flake food. It has a 48% protein content. I've actually had customers...
Also, I'm from the Western PA area and had to go to a local feed store to get that high of a protein content. Tractor Supply Store, Farm and Fleet, and Rural King (Farm Chain Stores in our area) did not carry feed with that high of a protein content. The local feed store mixes its own sacks of...
I keep quail in the garage with no issues. The car doesn't seem to bother them when its being pulled in or out. I use the GQF breeder pens to save on space since they can be stacked 5 high.
