Flystrike Treatment (illustrated WITHOUT graphic images)

I have also had BYC for 7 (!!) years now and never had this issue. Until today. :-( Mr. Roo got himself stuck upside down for a couple hours ? yesterday morning. I noticed he didn't come up to the fence with the girls and I hadn't heard him crow. Anyway I found him, got him released (basically...

Something got a huge chunk out of henny...

Thank you for your responses. Yes, it is open on top and I did think about a hawk... I also looked around the perimeter some more yesterday afternoon, found a few broken neck feathers, but not any sign of blood anywhere. Our rooster is very attentive, maybe he scared off whatever it was. She...

Something got a huge chunk out of henny...

I came home yesterday afternoon to find one of my hens all bloody with almost her entire back-of-the-neck exposed, gone, no skin. I couldn't find blood or feathers anywhere around the pen. She is in sick-bay in the house where it is warm, I hope she can heal with TLC and Vetericyn. Any ideas...

    lice and mites

Diatomaceous earth works to kill any soft bodied insect. I sprinkle some occasionally in the dirt where they dust off. Never had a problem with mites. It also has tons of uses around the house and garden and is totally natural and non toxic. I got mine mail order a couple years ago, also there...

First time processing a white broiler...It was heartbreak!

I know exactly what you mean, h. We have done meat birds the past two years. The first year I had to take them to the butcher and that made me feel a bit sad and like Judas, or something like that! First you are their feeder and they come running then But that feeling didn't last long. Last...

Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

As far as hen "kicking out" eggs... I am new to this too, but my first broody (hatched on the 30th) had kicked out 3 eggs one day. My first impulse was they must be bad and I should toss them. Then I tried to candle them (brown shell) couldn't really see much, except the air end and darkness in...

    Broody mama rejects 3 eggs?

Thanks for those great pics Alice!!! I had heard of the 'bulls eye' but I thought it had to be red! Yay! That means that most of the eggs I have looked at are fertile.

    Broody mama rejects 3 eggs?

So we are into our second week with a broody Barred Rock mama. She has 9 marked eggs and is all settled into her own private suite. This morning when I checked on her she had pushed 3 of the eggs out from under her. They are cold to the touch, I cannot see much candling them, just odd shaped...

Goats as a deterent for predators?

Quote: This reminds me of us before we lost two sweet hennys to a predator last summer. Most likely a raccoon. We had them for over a year, enclosed in a good large fenced area right next to our house, with a (mild) electrified wire. They liked to roost up in the trees at nite and did so for...
