I always check tnol.com and Louisiana market bulletin.
I have Rhode island red hens but just thinned down this summer. I have a mixed Breed rooster but no purebred.
Easier to get forgiveness than permission, especially if you have good fences. Don't get a roo and they won't bother anyone. I live out in the country, so don't have to worry.
dozen Black australorps, couple buff orp's, couple Aracauna, Brown Leghorn roo, few Muscovies, etc.
I recommend switching to a galvanized trough or rectangular bucket with a cheap float valve and a water hose. I switched to them a year ago and never have problems anymore. I got small enough ones they are easy to dump out every day for cleanliness.
My muscovies do well freeranging, and forage a lot. They are known for being good foragers. I have Pekins that forage very little and stay close to the pens. It might be different if you have a pond. My hen Muscovies fly well, but the drake is too big to fly. You could try to get small ones if...
I have three Muscovy hens on nests. I have one Pekin drake and one muscovy drake. I never dreamed when I got a pair of Pekins that the drake would be so aggressive! He pesters my muscovy hens to death every time he sees them and breeds them a lot. the muscovy is not nearly as aggressive nor...
I have finally gotten predators under control, now all my hens have found a safe spot to lay and are trying raise babies. I am worried I will go from 4 hens to 50 quickly. My muscovies are the ones who are nesting and found places I couldn't collect every day. They had a whole pile of eggs...
I feel for you. I just lost most of my batch of duck eggs. They were due to hatch yesterday, and the only activity I had was on Friday one pipped most of the way around one end, quit, and died.
My hen that was sitting on a dozen chicken eggs has twice left her eggs and moved to a different...
I freerange and muscovies can fly so they occasionally get broody and disappear outside the protected area. I am missing two right now and am afraid they nested too far from home. That's a risk you take when you freerange. My pekins never get more than 50 feet from their pen.
Muscovies are known as Tree ducks. They do not require ponds. Mine stay on the ground most of the time, but have perched on top of buildings a lot, as opposed to the trees.
My muscovy drake has always been too slow to mate with my other breeds of hens much, but the pekins and others always chase...
