Let's play Hen or Roo -- EE

Thanks! It does seem like that long tail feather doesn't belong- and will hopefully molt out. What do you mean by "male feathering"? Do you mean more pointed saddle feathers? Is there something else I should be looking for?

Let's play Hen or Roo -- EE

This is my 17 week old Easter- Blue Ameraucana and Marans cross- Not crowing at this point, but those curved tail feathers are confusing me. I'm still hoping she's a pullet.

    Cuckoo Marans - rooster maybe?

Thanks everyone for the responses. Good to know my gut was right. As far as him being a sex-link- I doubt it. I ordered a hen from a fairly reputable hatchery and got a boy by mistake-- I know mix ups happen, and they refunded my money, but I like to think they wouldn't have mixed up a sex link!

    Cuckoo Marans - rooster maybe?

I re-homed my Cuckoo Marans when he was about 10 weeks old pretty sure that he was a Roo based on the double barring on the feathers. The new owners just sent me a pic- and even though I thought I was getting good at this stuff, I still think it's hard to tell what he/she is. What do you all...

    ameraucana rooster??

I just had a shocking revelation when I heard what sounded like a small crow from our chicken coop. Now that I look more closely, I don't know how I didn't see it before. The curving tail feathers, the feathers around the neck? Is our Ameraucana a rooster?? He/She is 17 weeks old.

    Cuckoo marans

Hi all- me again. SO my chicks are about three weeks old now and I'm still obsessing over whether the cuckoo is a pullet or a cockerel. With the research I've done here's what I know to look for: Spot on head: - males larger and yellowish - females, very small spot Barring on feathers...

    Cuckoo marans

Thanks Chooks Man! I can see from your other posts, that you have lots of experience and know what you're talking about. I went to my local feed store this weekend just to see the other Cuckoo Marans chicks and compare the barring because to my very inexperienced eye, I have been worried that...

    Cuckoo Marans chick sexing?

AKfishchic- I'm certainly no expert but I've had a Cuckoo Marans hen before (she was taken by a bobcat last winter ) and I'm pretty sure yours is a girl. On males, there is usually more light-colored barring - almost like white striping but not quire. The barring on females looks more like...

    Cuckoo marans

I know this is an old thread, but I'm replying to it with my question in the hopes that one of you experts who sees Cuckoos all the time can help. Our new Cuckoo Marans is about 10 days old and I'm worried she (?) might be a male. I'm noticing some feathers on the top of her back that are...

    Cuckoo Maran. Boy and girl?

I know this is an old thread, but I'm replying to it with my question in the hopes that someone can help. Our new Cuckoo Marans is about 10 days old and I'm worried she (?) might be a male. I'm noticing some feathers on the top of her back that are rather surprising to me, and based on other...

    Bobcat attack!

Thanks for your post - and the update later. One of my girls "Noodle" was attacked today and reading this is giving me encouragement. I've created a small pen for her in the house to keep her warm and separated from the others. She is definitely in shock- just sitting or standing there making...

When will this pullet start laying?

Believe me, I know how hard it is to be patient- but my understanding is that it's totally normal for them to take 7 or 8 months or longer to get going- especially this time of year when we don't have much light. We got four day-old chicks on April 25th- 1- The Mottled Java started early at 18...

    Ex Broody still not laying-

HI there I'm new to the forum and looking for some advice- I'm a relatively new chicken mama. We have four pullets- my java started laying at 18 weeks- she layed for about a month and then went broody- I was finally able to break her of it after about two weeks- she lost a little weight, but she...
