I Would Like To Know What YOU Use

I had to use 3-4 250 watt bulbs for my 25 chicks. But it was darned cold where I live! *lol* I still have three burning in the coop to provide light and heat for chilly nights. I shut them off during the daytime if it looks like it'll get above 75 degrees.

    5-6 week old chick pics!

...of the other girls when just a baby, but (s)he's developed some white feathers when the others have not, and her? comb is much more pink. Faceshot: And some misc picks: So. What do you think I have? *lol* I couldn't get good pics of all of them - busy little creatures, they are!

Got my chicks! Got some questions..

I have one chick, who, at five weeks, /still/ does a whole lot of snoozing and lounging around lazily. I call her Lazy Sue. But I did keep a very close eye on her.

    Bald Golden Polish

...hurt or frightened, and I've never seen them pick at her, though that certainly doesn't mean it didn't happen. There's never been any blood or injuries. Do you suppose this is what's going on, or is this something that might happen to a Golden Polish chick? Will they grow back? *lol* Thanks!

Can Bantam chicks survive four days in the mail?

*hug* That's so hard. Hope all goes well for the rest of them!

Can Bantam chicks survive four days in the mail?

...- and thankfully, almost all of them had made it. Only one dead in the box, and I don't expect more than one or two to perish this time around. *whew* But I shudder to think of what might've happened if I'd waited until morning to get them. Mail may move on weekends - but how far depends on...

Adding new chicks to week-old chicks.

*lol* I see how that sounded. They're 1 week old, and there's 8 of them. *lol* Sorry. And I did get my chicks today (though I called the big post office 90 miles away and went and picked them up a day early just to ensure they got here safely) - and they seem to be getting along fine!

    Another chick handling question...

...cannot reach. I have two doors in my house - the bathroom, and the bedroom. But there's just no way... Even the bathroom is tiny and barely has room for me! *lol* It's not the smell or the mess - it's the cats and the house design that leaves me with a problem. The garage is attached, at least!

This cannot be right. (see pic included)

*giggle* I wish I had known this a week ago. I recieved a bunch of dead and deathly ill chicks in the mail.... and was worried anytime the poor things weren't standing up that they were about to die, so I'd hurriedly "revive" them with a guide to the waterer. *lol* A week later, I see that my...

Adding new chicks to week-old chicks.

As you may know, I lost most of my chicks from my first order, so McMurray is sending me a new batch for arrival either today or tomorrow. Will I run into serious problems just putting a bunch of new chicks in with 8 week-old chicks? Should I separate them for a bit, or will they be not so...

    Another chick handling question...

...been having to use some cardboard to sort of sweep them over toward me (they go running, chirping madly and trying to fly out of the brooder... *cough*) so I can pick one up and inspect its bottom and all that. But I suspect this is not helping me out on the whole "make the chicks friendly"...

    Chick pics!

Unfortunately, no trucks come into our post office on Sundays. I'll have to wait until Monday - which is just as well, because everything, even overnight mail, takes an extra day here. Last time, they didn't arrive until Tuesday. Which was probably the problem, along with cold weather.

    Chick pics!

Unfortunately, only 13 of the chicks arrived alive, and several of those struggled to keep up but just couldn't make it. *shakes head* I suspect an Easter weekend delay plus cold weather did them in. Either way, it was pretty devastating. The hatchery IS making good on it - or trying. They're...

    Chick pics!

keljonma - the chick's feet are black on the bottom as well! She's a real skittish girl - hard to catch her to find out! *laugh* One drawback to a kiddie pool brooder - not too easy to catch them in!

    Chick pics!

...thus far. Happily, they're healthy now! These pics are from yesterday, so there is one non-survivor in the group - I've put a pink dot on her. *lol* I have not identified any of these, as they were part of an assortment that could include any and all chicks, except bantams. I do know that the...

    Eating litter??

Mine aren't quite a week old. I took the paper towels out this morning, and watched them peck around a bit - but there was some spilled food in the shavings, and that seemed to be mostly what they were pecking at. They injested a few bits, but soon enough found the actual feeder and chowed down...

    Chicks arrived!

Oh, I've definitely notified them. I'll check into seeing if I can pick the chicks up in the bigger post office 60 miles away, since they will likely sit and stay there overnight no matter which night they arrive.

    Chicks arrived!

...this time. Perhaps they'll be more careful in packing and shipping, or perhaps the weather will just turn nicer and they'll have an easier trip. *crosses fingers* Edited to say that I am definitely down to 8 chicks now. *sigh* But the others seem healthy and strong, though terrified of me...

    Chicks arrived!

It was pretty devasating. Especially to have them keep dying, as well. I've talked the issue over with family and I may ask them to replace the order. See if I have better luck the second time around. I'm also considering ordering through the local feed store, and while prices are cheaper, there...

    April Showers Bring........SNOW?!?!

Tell me about it. We got 6-8 inches last night all of a sudden. Most of it's melted off, but... man, what a spring.
