Rain here today. Hoping it will clear so I can harvest some more of the blackcurrants. Need to chop back the wisteria before it starts growing onto the windows.
You could do it more often but it soaks in and stays on the legs a few days. You need to do it for long enough to break the life cycle when mite eggs hatch, not sure how long this is. I don't do anything special to prevent it, not sure what I could do apart from make the coop wild bird proof in...
Probably best to treat whole flock, I usually do. You can get sprays from the store for convenience but I also use the vaseline because it's cheap and effective. I apply once a week, normally for 3 weeks running.
Maybe an infection? Do her eyes and nose look clear? She could need antibiotics but I guess if it was contagious the others would be showing signs as well by now.
A lot of the people who hunt around here are from the farming community. I understand using pest control to protect your livelihood or pets but there is a difference between killing outright with a clean shot and chasing down an animal with a pack of dogs and ripping it apart.
Sorry to hear the sad news about Coho. I used a spot on treatment last year for treating lice when I had a bad outbreak. The one I used is called Xeno but I don't know if it's available in the US. It was expensive but using DE wasn't getting on top of the problem. Wild birds mix with my flock...
Started leeks, parsnip and broad bean seed in the greenhouse today, and one clove of elephant garlic which I've been wanting to try. Cold and windy but mild in comparison to what a lot of you in the US have.
Try making a splint from microporous tape or band aid and maybe a matchstick. You can tape the toes into place onto a small disc of cardboard. At this age the chicks' bones will still be quite soft and they can be set. We did this once with a chick who had twisted toes and she was up in no time...
This is Black Pearl, peeping in through a hole in the door so she can watch me clean the shed. she is a Silkie/Polish and is a very small build with 5 toes. She is obsessed with food!
Thanks for the info. Had an outbreak a few months ago and lost 5 birds. Have not had bloods done but they showed symptoms of the different forms so I'm pretty sure. Think maybe it came in with some I got at a show, have heard bad things about the place since. Heartbreaking to lose my pets but...
I am 90% sure I have Mareks in my Silkies, I haven't had a blood test but have had several symptoms of the different forms. A few years ago I bought some birds from a show, they were from commercial breeders and I thought the birds has been vaccinated. Two of them died within a year, one with a...
