They are almost five months old, have been hand-raised, are friendly and will eat out of your hand. They free-range on several acres with other chickens but really need a flock to look after. If you can give them a good home, with room to roam and girls of their own... please let me know...
Wow, I feel so bad for your losses. And yes, I think your boys were protecting their girls. It's a difficult decision to replace. If you bring in older chicks, you not only risk diseases but also the former owner's treatment. If you bring in young chicks, you and your older chicks can bond...
Wow... that is a monster egg. Hopefully she'll perk up now that it's out. Keep an eye on her... see if she's getting more lethargic, staying puffed up, has droopy wings or tail, stops eating or drinking, has problems laying, etc. Has she ever been broody?
Run your shower really hot... not with her in it of course... then close any doors and windows. Do you have any foods with calcium like cheese, yogurt, milk, sardines?
Sorry about your losses... I lost 3 out of 5 when I started last year and thought I must be doing something wrong. But I wasn't... there's usually a reason behind big losses. It sounds like you've got a good coop setup. By the time chicks are 8 weeks old, you need to switch them to a good...
I suppose pasty butt could inhibit growth... depending on how long and severe it was. She does look a lot younger than the other one. And they grow so quickly in the first two months. Maybe she's a runt and will catch up eventually. Maybe she's a he and just slower to feather. Slip her a...
Sorry no one has responded yet... sometimes people just don't have an answer. This really is a good, helpful site.
Is she getting enough calcium? I had a hen that was laying thin-shelled eggs. I made sure she had lots of oyster shells but she didn't seem that interested in it. I found out...
Thanks for the reply. He's never had any crop issues. He's not skinny, but he's also not real meaty. Yesterday he did his routine while crowing and today while eating... so it's getting worse. I'm at the point where I'm wondering if his routine might just be the beginnings of seizures and...
Ru is a 15 month old Golden Campine that has been acting progressively strange since mid-April. We had a small flock of 5 and added to it by hatching 10 of his off-spring in April and 3 more (unplanned) with a broody in May. Now none of the eggs are fertile. In May he started dancing and...
You might want to feed them grower until they start laying eggs. Beyond that... could they have gotten into anything toxic or moldy? Do you use fertilizer or weed killer on your grass/weeds? Where they vaccinated for cocci?
Maybe she's older than you think? Or she could have an internal laying problem... they can have problems with walking and lethargy. Maybe her toenails are too long? Scaly leg mites can cause difficulty in walking too.
Have you tried Sav-A-Chick? There's an electrolyte pack and a probiotic pack... I use both for the first month or so. One gives vitamins, the other has good digestive stuff. She does look weak... will she eat some scrambled egg? Mine go crazy for eggs... I also give them a bit of parakeet...
Big chick pics... they are 11 and 12 days old today!
This is probably a girl... long tail and wing feathers, plus she's really sweet and calm.
And this is probably a boy... no tail, short wing feathers, a pinkish comb, and he's a little trouble-maker already.
They had scrambled eggs for...
Congrats on the hatches... love all the cute pics!! And of course, good luck to the rest!
So I tried to slip in a couple chicks when broody mama got off the nest. She eyed them and me with a suspicious look... they tried to snuggle under her twice but she jumped up and clucked at them, and...
My little ones are a week old today and doing great! But I have a dilemma and really need some advice.
Their mama decided to go broody a few days ago. What timing! Is it too early to try and fool her with these babies now? If I wait a week or two, will they be too big to fool her...
You probably should write the dates on the eggs as you put them in your incubator. Duck, goose and chicken eggs all have different incubation periods... so you need to know what day each one goes into lockown. I just did my first hatch and I numbered each egg so I could keep track of weight...
