Ameracauna gods with me this time

    Out of 6 Ameracuana pullets, I've got 2 blue-egg layers, 1 pink-egg layer and 3 green-egg layers. Yahoo!

Average age to start laying for certain breeds?

Here is a list of the 26-week old pullets that I have. I know that only 6-7 of them are laying currently. I have 34 of these pullets and consequently feel I should be getting a lot more eggs per day. Can those of you in the know please offer an opinion on the age that each of these breeds...

    Light ?

Does it make a difference whether you turn extra light on earlier as in 4 am or just keep it on later as in til 10 pm? In other words, should I be waking them up earlier or just letting them stay up later? Which would be optimal for continued egg laying throughout the winter months? I have...

My small solution to a muddy run

I use the deep litter method in my henhouse but still have all of the shavings completely changed about every 3 months. When DS does this, he tosses the old shavings out into the run. This makes a nicer surface to walk on than the mud which would otherwise prevail and my girls think they've...

    My new henhouse/coop

This is the old "temporary" henhouse that ended up lasting me almost 5 years. What an eyesore! It was nearly 8ft long with the nest on one end. Unfortunately, the hens kept laying eggs in the OTHER part, forcing me to go fishing for eggs with an aquarium net duct taped to a PVC pole. What fun...

    Russian Spangled Orloff--no tail

Well, I wanted to know how common it was for a Russian Spangled Orloff to be without a tail. anybody know? I had 2 pullets, one with a tail and one without. Unfortunately, my neighbor shot and killed the one with the tail...the "normal" looking one.

    Tomato plants OK for chickens?

A frost got my tomato plants already. There are still quite a few tomatos on them and I was gonna give those to the chickens. Is it ok to just pull up the whole plant and toss it to them?

    First egg from Marans pullet

I got the first egg from one of my Marans on Aug 11. Now, I just have to figure out which of the four it is from. I think, judging by the color of the skin on her head (redder than the other 3), it is my golden cuckoo.

    Peacomb vs Rosecomb

Could somebody explain or show me pics of the differences in these two comb styles?

Partridge Rock vs Partridge Chantecler....need pics please

I have both of these breeds, about 14 weeks old, and I can't tell who is who. I've gone to Feathersite but can't get a real good look at the feather patterns. Could those of you who have this breed post some closeup pics or just give me a detailed description? The partridge Wyandotts were...

Hen gasping and coughing (choking) for 2 days now

I have a hen that has been gasping for air and coughing for at least 2 days now. She acts like she has something stuck in her throat not sick. She drinks but I haven't seen her eat. This happened after my SIL served up a huge hissing beetle to the girls the other day. Also, there are...

    Cutting metal siding ?

What is the best way to cut a hole in the side of a metal shed, for a window? Can I use a jig saw? What blade should I use if I do? I've only ever used a jig saw to cut wood before.

    Coop out of metal shed

I might be getting a metal shed from my neighbor to use for a chicken coop. I would want to put windows in it. Can anybody help point me to some pictures of other coops similar to this idea?

Strange doins in the chickenyard, at 12:30 a.m.

For some inexplicable reason, I found four of my hens running around the chicken yard at 12:30 a.m. last night. I managed to catch two of them and throw them up into the chicken house, but 2 of them remained out all night. There were no signs or smells of predators anywhere near last night...

Looking for pullets or layers, Roseburg, OR area

I am still looking for a few new birds for my backyard laying flock. No roosters are allowed here. I live near Roseburg, OR but am willing to drive up to 100 miles to get new birds, although it would be fabulous if I could get them in my general vacinity. I am looking for black austrolorp...

Wanted in Oregon, started pullets or young hens

I am looking for a few good layers to add to my 3-year-old flock of hens. I would be wanting darkly feathered heavy breeds of birds like welsummer, black australorp, dark Ameracauna or EE, or even brown leghorn. I would love to come across at least a couple of black-copper marans. I'm only...

    Wanting your opinions

I have these three hens, sold as araucanas but I believe are Ameracaunas or maybe just EE. They all three have muffs or beards and slate colored legs, although I'm most probably the worst photographer that ever held a camera and the pictures don't show much of their muffs, beards or leg color...

Anybody had labels printed for their egg cartons?

I'm thinking of getting sticker/labels printed for my egg cartons. I had some labels that I printed up myself just on 3x5 cards (my egg cartons are clear) but I don't have a printer that works anymore. I was wondering if anybody else has had some printed up and who did it?

    I'm no "new egg"

I just wanted to set the record straight. I'm not a "new egg" on BYC. I've been a member since 2001 with hundreds of posts to my credit. Or was it 2002? Anyway, just sayin.
