    bator and hatcher, any disadvantages?

Been reading for a while and can't figure this one out. So far I have hatched with broodies, but I am thinking about getting a cabinet incubator. Some of the incubators have a hatching tray at the bottom. I know most people who hatch a lot have a separate hatcher, but cost is a concern for me...

    Barred Rock can not walk

I have a 1 year old BR, that can not walk. I have had the occassional chicken with a bad foot, but they could still hobble around and it has always healed itself. I took a look at her and she has a foot that is a little swollen, but it's not that bad. I have read about bumble foot and it does...

    Eggs stored upside down

Yikes! Got confused and stored hatching eggs with the small end up in an egg carton. All eggs were less than a week old when set. My first hatch is in a week. Does anyone think that this will make a big difference? I did not rotate the eggs either. I have done this a few times before with out...

     Animal Protien

Chickens are omnivores, but chicken feed does not contain animal protien. In fact, the label clearly states that animal products are not included, so an all vegetarian feed is actually part of the marketing. Why is this? Thanks.

    Kane Waterer

Has anyone tried the Kane waterer? Just got a new Premier catalogue and it looks interesting, a low profile water dish hooked into the garden hose with a float. Disads would be birds might pooh into it and I would want to use a hose rated for potable water. Advantages would be that it is good...

    Hawk Population

I hate to bring this up, but has anyone noticed a decrease in hawk acitivity this year? Although the fall migration season has not started, by now I usually have one or two that have paid a visit. Maybe the stiff winter has decreased their numbers? (knock on wood).

    Electro-net Fencing

Just a reminder that although expensive it does work. I have not had a single loss to a four legged predator in 2 years. You do have to put in extra work to move the coop and fencing when your grass wears down, but it is a small price to pay to have safe, happy, and healthy birds. Of course...

    wather proofing wood with polyurethane

I built a new coop this year, 10 by 16 on skids, no floor, that I move with the pickup. To protect the wood I painted the exterior with an oil based polyurethane. I know nothing about sealing wood, until just recently when I had a shed delivered and starting looking at the different types of...

Max time on grower feed for adults

I have several age groups in my flock ranging from adults to 7 day old chicks. I have had multiple hatches from broody hens and keep everyone together in the same flock. I feed everyone flockraiser (20% protien) and provide oyster shell free choice for the hens. So far so good, everyone is...

    Late season broody hens

I posted this on a broody hen thread and did not get a response, so maybe it is more of a breed question. My first season with broody hens and I have a few questions. Did not expect to have any broodies this year, so I ordered a game breed to use next year. I have BR, NH and SS from a...

    Brave/Foolish Hawk

We have had a hawk make a few unsuccessul passes at our flock of 22. Well, yesterday, he was successfull. Wife called me at work and said that he had made a kill and that she could not shoo him away, she even blasted him with the water hose. I came home and walked directly up to the hawk and put...

    When to cull agressive rooster?

It's my first flock. A straight run of heritage breeds (New Hamp. Barred Rock & Speckeled Sussex). I have culled almost all of the cockerels. The pullets have started laying. They are about 20 weeks old. I am very pleased with the slaughter, it went well and the flock is more harmonious than...
