First Sick Chicken - Heavy Breathing, Drooling, Lethargic and then suddenly died

Thank you for the info Toddrick. I can't take a fresh poo to the vet unfortunately because she has passed and I have no way of knowing which poos were hers in the coop/run. So far our other 10 chickens are looking perfectly fine. The eggs she was laying have been clean also, no poo on them.

First Sick Chicken - Heavy Breathing, Drooling, Lethargic and then suddenly died

We purchased 12 baby chicks back in May and one of them passed away when she was only a few weeks old, she had physical deformities. The others have been very healthy and 2 have them have started laying eggs within the past month. This evening my husband went out to closed the chicken coop door...

First Flock, One Started Laying Small Eggs

Thank you for the info junebuggena! I kind of figure that was the case with the eggs, but I figured it didn't hurt to ask. Also suspected the same about the aggressive behavior. We give our chickens plenty of space, enrichment and food and water so I didn't think they'd have too much to fight...

First Flock, One Started Laying Small Eggs

We are raising our first flock of backyard chickens, we have 11 of them. Just this past weekend one of our leghorns started laying eggs, we have 2. I read that leghorns lay extra large eggs, but these eggs are small, like what they call small eggs in the grocery store, these are slightly smaller...

    Baby Chick Pictures!!!!! POST!

Our first 12 chicks, just got them this morning from a local feed store that I order them from. We have 2 "Easter Eggers", 2 buff orpingtons, 2 black sex links, 2 black australorpes, 2 barred rocks, and I believe the last 2 are White Leghorns. I use to be a lurker/dreamer on this site, but now I...

    What are your talents?

I can tune out just about anything even if it's annoying, including my 3 kids saying my name over and over again, or when my girls play animals and there is constant mooing and barking coming from the back of the car. Drives my husband nuts because he cannot tune it out and he doesn't understand...

    how much space per chicken

Maybe as time goes on they will get a little more use to them? At least the big ones aren't beating the little ones up too much. Thanks for letting me know how it's going. I am trying to learn everything I can on here about raising chickens before I get mine. I had to the go to the farm supply...

Comment by 'MrsSerfesME' in article 'So You Want A Colorful Egg Basket'

I am so glad I found this article. I am hoping to have a varied flock to get different colored eggs. I grew up on brown eggs, our grocery stores have always sold white and brown eggs. We've also occasionally have gotten white and brown eggs from friends or family members with chickens, but I...

Green thumb is itching, anyone else?

I must say, I am enjoying not only learning about chickens on this site from everyone who has real life experience, by all the gardening tips and advice are great also. Both things are somewhat new to me since I have recently moved into the first home that I can actually call mine. Thank you...

    how much space per chicken

Davaroo, I am totally with you, if I could get around having to clean up after my animals that would be ideal, but I am willing to do it if I have to. I have never raised an animal that I did not have to clean up after. I also raise animals for the enjoyment of raising animals and even though I...

Comment by 'MrsSerfesME' in article 'A Frame Chicken Coop'

That is so cute! I have been searching for ideas on here as we want a functional coop that's also attractive and I love this idea. The wood floors and vinyl on the walls are a great idea.

    how much space per chicken

Personally I have parts of my property which would be perfectly fine for chicken to create bare earth on because they are not the middle of my lawn and it's mean less yard to mow. They are also areas with great drainage so the chickens won't be standing in mud when it rains. So I'm with you...

    how much space per chicken

Davaroo, I don't want my chickens to live in their mess, and neither does mike001. I think it suits THEIR needs to not live in their mess, as well as ours because it's unsanitary and unhealthy for them, weather they can adapt to it or not. When they are sick because they live in unsanitary...

Green thumb is itching, anyone else?

Those are all great idea for re-purposing stuff. I love re-purposing things, it drives my husband nuts because I want to save everything and he hates clutter. We have some old metal well pumps, one of which is missing the actually pumping part with the handle so it just the base with the top...

    how much space per chicken

Way too funny mike001, I love the "nano-disassemblers" part. Honestly I am enjoying this discussion that has been going on regarding the space needed per chicken. I am a newbie and my husband and I were, again, discussing coop and run design and size last night so it's good to be able here...

That's too funny, you think he would have been interested in that. I have only seen rattle snakes on TV. Depending on the source, there are Timber Rattlers up here in Maine, but I have yet to ever hear about anyone seeing one this far up. Would be cool, though!
