We're in South Jersey, what part are you in? Any suggestions on where to go to change up our flock now that cowtown (salem county) stoped doing auctions?
No roo in the coop. We do have an unwanted wild turkey who is a tom. But he's "chicken" and avoids the girls when they are out and about. He won't go away because of the neighbors feeding him and he thinks the hens are his gals. I don't think he can mate from the outside of the run!
Thanks for...
5 of our 11 hens are losing the feathers on their backs just above the tail feathers. Our RIR, Jersey Black Giant, Austra. and a buff. The white leghorns, barred rocks and the delaware are fine. We get 10 -11 eggs a day so it definately isn't a molt.
We're thinking either mites, or pecking by...
I am a music teacher who is now a stay-at-home mom to 2 little kiddies and 23 chicks and big hens. I teach privately at home now. I am also a professional violinist/trumpeter. Weird combo, but it gets me lots of weddings!
My husband is a History Teacher for HS kids. He coaches Lacrosse and is...
Our hens are goofy. The white Leghorn thinks she is a roo sometimes and comes out to crow. I couldn't believe my ears the first time it happened. But she lays eggs! She's our only white egg layer.
The neighbors on our right had chickens so they don't mind. The ones on the left were worried but...
Our leghorn lays every day. She only took a few weeks off in the winter and then back to work. She and her sister, who passed, would have competitions to see who could lay the most double yolk eggs. It was fun to go out and see them compete.
Still, she is our best layer...next is our aracauna...
1 Aracauna - Chippy
1 white Leghorn - Sunny
2 Black Jersey Giants - no names..
2 banties - Domino and nuggets
1 Buff Orph - Goldie
They are all going to cowtown in 4-6 weeks when the new chicks are old enough to go outside. I hope a good person buys themm and doesn't eat them.
New babies-...
South Jersey-Gloucester County. Not many chicken owners down here....but we are near Cowtown! Lots of auctions...that's where we sell the chickens that we don't want to keep.....the roos that were supposed to be hens!
We used a kiddie pool the first time and then had to add cardboard all around it to make it higher.
This year we made our own box that is 24" tall. Keeps our kids (2 1/2 and 1 yr old) out of it. Also keeps the chicks in it.
They are so easy to make with scrap wood. On the sides we used really...
I feel really bad. One of my 5 day old chicks is really sick. Her one eye is swollen shut. I have been forcing her to drink. Even had her drink some gatoraide to get something more than just water. She started to get really limp.
It's been more than 24 hours. Poor baby. She is completely limp...
I think the ones in the middle look exactly like my EE chickens. They looked like that at the same age and teh green legs kinda give it away. You'll know for sure if you start getting blue/green eggs!!!
Thanks, I will try the electrolytes.
I assume it is ok for all of the chicks. One of the two just died, but the one with the closed eye is still hanging on. She is standing and lays her head down to sleep.
I also raised up the heat lamp. It was reading at 95-97 degrees in a few places in...
Yes, they have a heat lamp...the area is 90-93 degrees
All of the other chicks are eating, peeping and running back and forth when I go near them.
sad news, one just died. The one with the one eye closed and just standing limp is still living.
All others look ok.
And our other brooder of...
