    Chickens and irrigation?

Should I allow our 10wk old chicks out while our yard is being irrigated? Here is a picture of their run. The water only gets a couple of inches deep, and absorbs within a day or two. Should I just keep them in? This is the first time it's been irrigated since they've had their run.

Updates photos of my little flock (pic heavy)

They are 10 weeks old tomorrow! We have been away for 2 weeks, and I was shocked by how much they have grown! Our caretaker said that she heard one of them attempting to crow, but I haven't heard it. Do you see any of these that look cockerel-ish?? I had thought it'd be the ?-colored Ee...

    Nest boxes at what age?

My chicks are 10 weeks old now... at what age should I put in nest boxes? If I put them in before they are laying, will they just poop in there?

    What Quail breed?

What breeds of Quail are allowed in captivity in Arizona? I had found a nest of quail eggs last summer, and was able to find on the internet that it is considered illegal to keep Gambel quail (which are native here) in captivity. Are there any breeds that it is OK to keep?

    Confused about Ameracauna vs Ee's??

I have 3 chicks (in question) going on 10wks old now, I bought them from MPC as 1 day olds. After reading over and over again "if you buy from a hatchery that they are Ee's not Ameraucanas", I assumed that what I had were Ee's...which I am fine with. Whatever. I just want to know what I have...

Decided on a name for our cockerel/someday Roo....

Austin....as in Austin Powers! Based on...he's a bantam EE, so he's a (or will be) randy little guy, surrounded by shag-a-licious babes, trying to keep evil at bay! What do you think? I told my DBF, and he said I was "Sick, just sick"!

    Chicken size comparisons

I'm having a really hard time envisioning what size my chickens are going to be when full grown. Since I don't know ANYONE else with chickens (I am alone with this disease! :o) I don't have any other chickens to compare to either. I'm not sure my chicken door is big enough for them to get in...

What is the best place to find netting for the top of my run?

Horse stall converted to chicken coop

I'm open to any helpful suggestions. I'm already aware that the run needs to be covered to protect from hawks and am working on getting netting! Anything else? The interior. It also has a raised wooden floor, since it's an irrigated lot and the dirt floor of the stall tended to get a little...

At what age do they quit growing?

At what age do they quit growing? This is my first batch of chicks, and I'm wondering how big they are going to get? I have the following bantam breeds...BR, EE, and Silkies.

    What size grit for Banty's?

I remember reading that sand was fine as chicks, will it be fine as adults as well? Right now they have a large container of playground sand with DE mixed in it to bathe in that I figured they use for grit as well.

    Barred Rocks or Marans?

After reading a little about Marans, I'm not sure if these are barred rocks or Marans...what do ya'll think? (Only the two black and white ones are in question here, I believe the three on the left are E-e's and then there are the two silkies.) They are all bantys from a hatchery...

    What's the expected timeline?

I have 7 Banty chicks, which are almost 9 weeks old now. We recently heard one of them attempt crowing, so I'm pretty sure we have a rooster in our midst! Is this a usual age for them to start crowing? They are living in a 10x12 converted brick horse stall, with an automatic door, and a 12x12...

an "AWWW How cute is that!" moment

I rearranged the coop the other night and gave my 7 old banty chicks (6 weeks old) a new place to roost. I closed the door and watched from outside to see if they were going to use it. Three of the regular feathered chicks figured it out and settled in on their roost. The other four, two of...

Newbie question - Why do chickens go inside the coop at night?

Is it because they don't see well at night? Maybe because it's just instinct? I'm just curious. I just ordered an automatic door for our ladies....they are 7ish week old banty ladies and have been kept inside their 10X12 hen house until now. I just want to make sure that when the light...

    Do I NEED a rooster?

I have 7 bantam pullets (at least I think they are all pullets). I'm new to chickens and I've been reading lots of info here at BYC. It seems that roosters do a lot to protect their flock of hens....do I need one? I will be keeping the hens at our ranchette, which is approximately 1 acre in...

Is this normal for month old chicks?

We moved our 7 bantam chicks out to a 10' x 12' brick enclosed building 2 days ago. It has a wooden floor, covered with about 4" of pine shavings. It stays fairly cool compared to outdoor temperature (100 yesterday) and is well protected and the brick holds the warmth at night (70ish at...
