Is this Dominicker or Barred Rock? Hen or rooster?

Well again... You'd have to pick through the tail. I've got a young pullet (of a different breed) and her tail curves a bit but she's only about a month old. They curl but when I check the feathers, they ARE rounded off at the ends even if the tail itself isn't very defined. She's just got soft...

Did you ever end up picking through the tail? Let me know! :) This video might help you determine the gender!

    Anybody know what this is??

The chick in the middle of this picture has got me baffled... I got her from Rural King and the bin she was in said "Ameraucana." I'm just not so sure? When I pick her up, she's very thick and meaty and it's not anything like any of my other egg layers. I can try to get you a better picture if...

Just read you did end up having a cockerel! Bummer! I was guessing pullet from that first pic!

Is this Dominicker or Barred Rock? Hen or rooster?

Here's a picture of my barred when she was roughly a couple months older than yours currently is... In case that can help you eyeball it. :)

Is this Dominicker or Barred Rock? Hen or rooster?

It's a Barred. :) As for the gender, pick through it's tail... If the feathers come to a point and aren't very defined, its a rooster. If the feathers are defined and are squared or rounded at the ends, its a pullet... Males also have and arch in the tail. Female's tails create a fan and will be...

    RIR Rooster?

Thats a shame! I know RIR tend to be a little more on the aggressive side but I've got my fingers crossed for a good boy! My RIR hen can be wicked at times... But since I've got some older hens in the flock, I'm hoping they'll keep him in check until he matures. :) Thanks for the help!

    RIR Rooster?

I've got a 1 month old RIR and she's looking like a he... It's supposed to be a pullet but I'm now thinking it's a cockerel and I'm VERY excited about the possibility! I was disappointed at first but the more I think it's a cockerel, the more I'm growing to love the idea. So, now I'm afraid I've...

    Change in Behavior.

They lay in the coop. Currently our coop design is a little... Crappy. So we are renovating it to make room for some new flock additions its been blocked off.

    Change in Behavior.

No eggs. Just babies! I might stick some golf balls under her to give her the whole experience since I usually take her eggs and I don't own a rooster. I feel like that would give her something fulfilling to do while she waited. And I ordered five little ones! My flock is currently a sad little...

A Broody Hen/Letting Her Adopt Chicks?

YES!!! I have a broody hen! I'm so excited! I'm getting some babies in a couple of weeks and was hoping one of my ladies would go broody! Does anyone have experience or advice on having a hen adopt and raise babies? Should I just do it myself? Do I need to keep her and the babies separate...

    Change in Behavior.

Here's a little update for anyone who is interested... My Australorp is now broody. I stuck her in the coop to give myself some peace and when I went to go check on her later, she puffed up and growled. She's sticking to the nesting box like glue so... I suppose she wants babies. Lucky for...

    Change in Behavior.

I've only got two hens (a Black Australorp and a Barred Rock) who are currently free ranging my yard. They typically do this all day long and enjoy it. They are around 10 months of age. For the last two days, my Australorp has started circling my house cackling like she is angry. Every time...

    I found a bald spot!

It's pretty much on the breastbone area. What are the broody signs? Or could she be molting? I'm not sure what the signs for that look like either. She's not really sticking to her nesting boxes. Whenever I go to let them in the yard she is eager to get out so there's nothing abnormal...

    I found a bald spot!

So... I'm not too worried about it at the moment but I did have a few questions. I've got an Australorp who is just under a year (around 9 months.) She is laying great, acting normal, and currently out in my yard foraging. The problem is; my husband picked her up before he went to work and I...

    Adding to the flock.

Great! Thanks! Everything I've read about adding to the flock just makes me feel like my hens are going to kill the babies. :( But I'm glad to hear death and serious injuries are less likely!
