How many Roosters is Too many Roosters?

We had unsexed chicks, a mix of barred rocks, ameraucanas, wyandottes, and buff orpingtons. We therefore had about 50% roosters. We were planning to let the roosters get large before processing, and were considering keeping a couple of them. At almost 20 weeks we were getting no eggs, roosters...

    Bantams as meat birds

We recently processed roosters from our dual purpose flock with the primary goal of reducing roosters, but we were pleasantly surprised how meaty the bantam cochins were. They look perfect for roasting over the fire on a hot dog stick! The biggest problem was they were harder to pluck - bits of...

    Do chickens know their breed?

I got chicks in two batches. The first batch has barred rocks, blue laced red wyandottes, and ameraucanas. They all stick together and sleep together in a pile. The second batch was 4 bantam cochins and 5 buff orpingtons. They run around my yard in two distinct groups, but the buffs and cochins...

Should I worry about my dogs following my chickens?

My lab/shepherd cross, after some training, now leaves the chickens entirely alone. He is an outdoor dog, and I completely trust him with the chickens. He no longer follows them around. Might have something to do with my attempt to teach avoidance. I held a rooster, he came up to sniff and got a...

My dog and goat are best friends

Most of the time the goat is actually in the pasture with the donkeys, but he is so friendly that we let him into the main part of the yard (where the hay is kept) when we are out there to supervise. He is a withered male, and full grown. They happened to be playing by the haystacks that day...

Should I worry about my dogs following my chickens?

Ok thanks all. I thought that was probably the case. The 8 month old is actually the easiest to correct, and I have been correcting them from following the chickens. It was only at night (like midnight and there were chickens still outside) that I had them helping me to find them, but I will...

Should I worry about my dogs following my chickens?

My chicks are around 10-12 weeks old and I'm having trouble convincing them to come out of the coop. I have two barred rock roosters who do like to come outside. I think they're being frightened by my dogs (2 shih tzus and a lab/german shepherd cross who is 8 months old). My dogs don't "chase"...

O my lord... I have nothing else to say... Chicken an turkey injurie *GRAHPIC TO THE MAX*!!!!!!

That's awful! Take some comfort in the fact that by posting it, others will learn from your mistake. I have 2 week old chicks that are separated just by hardware cloth in the same coop as 8 week olds. I was wondering when they could go together - I will definitely wait!

Help sexing this 2 week old barred plymouth!

My roosters are about 7 weeks old. I have 2 (one will be food). They are both the first to run up when my 5 and 7 year old step daughters hand feed them, and Chuck (not food) will sit on my lap

Took a Picture..if you can give me you opinion as to what we have

Maybe Orpington cross? They seem too "silvery" to be buff orpingtons.

Newbie here :) I have some chicks I picked up from a farm that I need help with

I think your barred rock is a rooster. The black one looks like an ameraucana and the dark brown is possibly a wyandotte? Can't help on the lighter brown ones.

Help sexing this 2 week old barred plymouth!

I think rooster. There is quite a bit of white on the feathers. My barred rock hens were mostly black with a hint of white. Also, In my own experience, the way he's craning his head up reminds me of my roosters. Such as the one in my profile pic :)

6 week old barred rocks... uh oh

All look like boys to me! It's the luck of the draw sometimes. I ended up with 5 hens and 2 roosters out of my straight run barred rocks this year.

Mystery Bunch - what breed(s) are they??

Penguin looks just like my barred plymouth rock chicks. And miss fluffy pants looks like a buff orpington. Starbuck looks like maybe a leghorn but definitely a white chicken.
